This is a great hike to do if you like to see different teraine and views to die for. Make sure its a clear sunny day and you will definatlely enjoy it.
Three highlights of the hike were
- the views from the top of Mount Ngauruhoe and mount Tongariro are spectacular.
- Not many people on the track and the track well marked and clear.
- The volcanic landscape i loved.
How do i get to the start of the track? First of all you need a 4wd, as it is steep, bumpy and windy.
- Turn off SH1 onto Kaimanwa road 17 km from Turangi.
- Travel 3.5km to the junction then turn right at this sign see pic below
Then turn left after 1.4 km when you see this sign see below
Then you will see anther sign similar to the one above with “urchin track’ again on it take a left here. The road up is steep, bumpy and windy and a little long keep going untill you make it to the carpark.
