Today we made our way down to the Te Toto Gorge. It was a very sunny day, and the views were breathtaking over the water and cliffs. The Te Toto coast has a long and diverse history, from destructive volcanoes to ancient Maori settlements. Geologists can trace the history of the Gorge back an incredible 2.7 million years. At present the track is not fully formed but it is marked from the Te Toto Gorge car park to the bottom of the gorge. A steep descent marks the start of the walk but the terrain flattens out closer to the coast.
To find the start of the track can be tricky. To find it drive for approx 10km from Raglan town to Whaanga Road. Follow the road until it goes onto a gravel road, and then follow this road for 4.2km and it will lead Te Toto gorge carpark. Park here, and make sure to leave no valuables in the car. Then walk back along the road you just drove 20 -25 big steps on your left you will find a hidden track(it is very easy to miss as it is not signposted).
NOTE
This Track is not well maintained and is very steep in places i found it fun other might find it too steep and challenging. Folllow the orange markers. Also once you get through the bush part of the track you will be walking on grass hills to the waters edge. The path here you kinda make up yourself. Walk carefully during this part as you walking in long grass with bigand little rocks scattered through this area ea, so easy to roll a ankle. If you go slow on the steep parts and slow on the grass bit you will be fine as this is what i did. Go Slow and you will be” sweet as” as we say in New Zealand.
30 min one way (15 – 20 min longer if you want to go to the waters edge)
Access from Te Toto Gorge car park
