The Lost World New Zealand

I went on this adventure with my “Adventure Friend”, Amanda Church. We were invited to do some abseiling, caving and climbing in Waitomo with our friend Gavin Smith, who works as a guide for Waitomo Adventures.

This was a cold winters day so we decided to do a dry adventure. Yay! No need to get wet in the cold water with this adventure! I was stoked; I hate the cold, and New Zealand winter can get pretty chilly.

Gavin decided to take us through “The Lost World”. This adventure is super cool as we started with a 100m abseil into a cave, which takes about 20 minutes to descend. The abseil is breathtakingly beautiful because you are surrounded on all sides by native greenery and amazing rock formations. You are literally immersed in nature. It definitely feels like a lost world as you drop down away from civilisation. On this day it was misty too, which made for an extra element of magical mystery! Eventually we landed in the base of the massive cavern.

Once at the base we spent our time exploring the massive vaults, glowworms, gigantic flowstone formations and massive caverns. It was truly magical. We even got to meet and pat a friendly Eel!

After this adventure we visited a waterfall called Marokopa Falls which was 21 km away from Waitomo along Taharoa road. It is a 15 min return walk to the falls. The falls are beautiful and definitely worth the drive and walk to see them.
