Waiwere Falls is situated approximately halfway between Te Aroha and Matamata in New Zealand’s North Island. The walk is spectacular and one of my favourites in the Waikato region. The track weaves through moss covered rocks and tree roots. Large boulders form natural pools and cascading waterfalls. The waterfall, at 153m, is one of the highest waterfalls in the North Island.
The return hike to the viewing platform at the base of Wairere Falls takes about one and half hours. The hike to the top of the Falls takes 2 and half hours.
After the hike you can visit some hot pools, 8 minutes away. These are called Opal Hot Pools & Holiday Park, which is situated at 257 Okauia Springs Road, Matamata. The cost was around $8 for the public pools and $15 for the private pool. I recommend a private pool which is spectacular and well worth the extra cost from the public pool.
